Super Mario 3D World is the first 3D Platformer for the Wii U and a sequel to Super Mario 3D Land. The game is developed by Nintendo EAD, and is a series staple. This is the first 3D game to feature Mario in HD, and this is also the first game to feature 4-player multiplayer.
In the multiplayer you can play as Luigi, Toad, Peach, and Rosalina, with Mario as player one of course. Luigi jumps higher than everyone, making him easier to reach high places. Peach is the slowest, but can glide in the air, making the best character for beginners. Toad runs the fastest, making him useful for speedruns, but jumps the lowest. Mario is an all-arounder, while Rosalina has a spin dash that can kill enemies, and also gives her extra air time.
Super Mario 3D World starts off as the gang are walking in front of the castle when they notice a clear pipe. (This is also the first Mario to feature Clear pipes, more on that later) Suddenly Bowser comes out and kidnaps a fairy princess and goes back inside the pipe, prompting you to follow him and rescue the princess.
The gang all decide to head inside the pipe and land in the sprixie kingdom, and thats where the adventure starts. However, one thing to note, yoshi does not appear in this game, but rather is replaced by Nessie, which you can ride him on the water, and you see him in more than one level.
Before going into the worlds and levels, lets talk about the changes. One of the changes you notice right in the beginning is that you can move freely on the world map. Not only that, but you can move and hit the bricks and coin blocks. You can also find 1-ups on the world map that you can collect.
Powerups: Super Mario 3D World has the most powerups in a mario game till now. Cat Mario is a prominent power that lets you transform into a cat. Once you’re a cat, you can pounce on enemies, or even climb up walls, which is super helpful. The next powerup is the double cherry, which makes a clone of your character to control. At once you can only have 5 clones of yourself, which makes them harder to keep them alive. Not only is this powerup fun to use, but it also opens up opportunities to fun level designs and puzzles. The next power is the tanooki suit. This suit lets you glide in the air, and you can also use the tail to kill enemies. Another item is a canon box. The canon box attaches to your head and launches cannons out of it that destroys everything on the screen. The power is specially useful to find green stars. And one last powerup is the coin block, which spits out coins as you move around.
Levels: Super Mario 3D world has less levels compared to super mario galaxy 2. In each level you have to find 3 green stars, and a stamp, which can be used to post on miiverse. Each level also has a timer, so you have to hurry up and keep a lookout on the time, specially when you reach those special levels that only give you a 100 seconds to complete the level. However with that said, every level in 3D World is distinct and different. Every level has its own unique charm and mechanics, such as the ground the changing everytime you jump, or a fall level in a winter world. The game also has online functionality, which you lets you race other people’s ghosts and compete for best time. In local, at the end of every level, you can see who got the most points, and the winner gets a crown, which makes it interesting as in the next level everyone tries to beat the person with the crown.
Super Mario 3D World is one of the best games on Wii U as of right now.
